iPod Ways around plugging in an iPod after a restore.

My friend has a new Nano and wants to restore it. Are there ways around having to plug it in to a wall adapter after the restore?
 
Will that work for a Windows computer? In the past they needed to be plugged into a wall, perhaps that's changed?

Maybe I'm fried.
