Ways of releasing the iPod?

I was wondering if anyone could help -

When the new ipods come about, will they be announced, and THEN be sold at a later date, or do apple usually put them on sale the day they announce them?

I can't remember if they let you preorder iPods, see.
I'd appreciate any help,
