What is a way to Sync iCal events/to do's among both Macs and PC's sharing a local network in the home?

I know one way is to simply use Google Calendar as the sync mechanism. But then why not just use Gcal?

I am looking to see if another - reasonable - way exists.

The question stems from my interest in using Mac apps to handle my time management system. I want to see if its possible. The first challenge would be syncing iCal. Currently members of my family all use shared calendars in Gcal.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
