Strange that it took this long to implement this feature since Google Maps has had it for a while.

Maybe it's just me but I can't see why this feature is really needed ?

I used to use this all the time when I was going to an event or new restaurant after work. Easier to do street view and check out the area from my computer after clicking the address in the invitation.

I use Waze on a daily basis. I’ve tried to use Apple Maps but it’s not the same. Having real time reports that a cop is ahead or an accident reported is too important not to have.

Does Apple Maps have live traffic updates?
Nope but what i do is open Waze to run in the background and then have Apple Maps doing the navigation. You then get the Waze notifications over the top of Apple maps. I dont like the routing or look of Waze but the user based reporting is very handy.

Waze works wonders for people in large cities. It’s also my go to for long trips.

I love Waze, but I've been finding myself using apple maps more recently just because I can use it with the Carplay home screen. Once Waze can show up on the home screen, I'll be 100% on waze.

It is no exaggeration to say that Waze has saved me hundred's of pounds in fuel bills and (ahem) potentially the odd speeding ticket, but also a great many hours of my life from being stuck in traffic.

While you guys are here, do you know what’s up with Waze’s refusing me to log in with my usual user ID? I get a message that says, “Email login will be back soon. Log in another way instead.”

Any have an issue with airpods not connectiong to Waze?

It used to for me but after an update earlier in the year it stopped working.

I've been using Waze for years but I recently noticed that it's been using a lot of battery in the background when it's supposedly in "sleep mode" on my iPhone. I found the reason in the latest version's release notes: "This app may use your location even when it isn't open, which can decrease device battery life."

The only way to prevent this drain on the battery, and the invasion of my privacy when I'm not using Waze is to quit the app after every use. It also makes this "Sleep Mode" screen a lie.

Hey Google, why should the app "use my location" even when it isn't open, and what exactly is it using it for?

The explanation is here. Most likely need is to predict when you should leave for scheduled appointments based on your current location.

If you don’t want it to access your location in the background, just change the location permission setting.

Changing the location permission setting doesn't work to prevent battery usage unless it's set to "Never", and even then you need to quit Waze to prevent that background usage.

It should not be accessing my location if I have "Planned drives reminders" unchecked under settings--> notifications.

That's annoying. You're right, it shouldn't be trying to do much of anything in the background if it's set to "while using the app" and it is "asleep."

I hate to say it, but knowing Google it wouldn't surprise me if they were tracking sensors (Waze is the only navigation app I've ever seen that requests permission to use your phone's motion data) and other data that the phone makes available to guess your location, even without permission.

Do you see Waze causing the purple location arrow on your iPhone to appear when you go into sleep mode? I just tested with mine and when I go into sleep mode it stops using my location.

I don't like having to remember to put Waze in sleep mode, which is why I don't use it much.

It should go into sleep mode automatically when you exit Waze using the "on/off" icon, top right after touching the magnifying glass icon bottom left on the main navigation screen.

Something else I note is that exiting Waze as I describe above, which should put it into "Sleep Mode", I can't adjust the "ringer" volume. Pressing the volume buttons brings up the vertical slider on the left, which adjusts the volume in Waze, instead of the smaller horizontal one marked "ringer".

I just launched Waze and exited immediately, and as you can see it still uses battery in the background.

This was a test just to show you. When I discovered this "feature" a few days ago it was showing something like an hour in use and 45 hours in the background!

Do you mean putting your iPhone into sleep mode (locked?) or just Waze?
Waze. I have the purple location arrow when I'm getting directions but when I put Waze into sleep mode it stops. I kept my phone on last night (not charging) and Waze isn't listed as draining any battery in my settings. I wonder if you're hitting some kind of bug with Waze.

At the App store there are few other comments complaining about above average battery use.

Maybe I'll try restarting my iPhone to see if anything changes, although I doubt it.

ISTR I updated Waze before updating to iOS 13.7...

Restarting my iPhone 8 fixed everything!

No more background battery use at all when in Sleep Mode, and pressing the volume buttons no longer brings up the vertical slider on the left, which adjusts the volume in Waze, instead the smaller, horizontal one marked "ringer" shows, as it should.

After updating to iOS 14 the problem is back, and after two restarts it's still there! 😕
