I am using a 1tb Western Digital external drive for time machine. I recently went through a thunderbolt issue that ended up frying my drag/drop drive so I am attempting to recover whatever I can from time machine. I plugged it in tonight and I thought it was spinning slower than usual (but it could be my paranoia because I just lost a drive) so I ran first aid on it. The drive, not running in recovery, shows three different parts to this external. I have no idea what they are...I just run backup on it periodically. One is container disk5. It shows it's failing and cannot be repaired and to back it up as soon as possible. Yes, I am in panic-mode. I then booted to recovery and ran first aid there. The drive only showed the one (wasn't broken down in to 3) and it came back the drive is ok.

Do I need to worry about the Container disk5 ? I don't even know what it is/means.. Thanks in advance!

It’s not clear which version of macOS you are running.. but… boot normal, not in Recovery, and turn off Time Machine in Settings. With the ext disk attached, launch Disk Utility, run First Aid on all three levels, starting with the top most, the device.. then the container… then the file system volume. Hopefully all pass First Aid. Turn TM back on.

Thank you! the first two passed just fine. The middle one went from container disk 3.. LOL. It says it cannot repair because it cannot be unmounted?
