WD Hard Drive Mounts Sometimes, but not consistently

I have an external WD MyPassport that is formatted for Windows (Bad I know, working on a transfer to a new drive), but it mounts on my Macbook Pro only sometimes. When not mounted, it shows in the System profile, but not in the Disc Utility.
Anyone know any way to make it load consistently. I haven't been able to determine what is different the times it mounts and the times it doesn't.
