WD Hard drive wont format?

Alright im Reallllllyyy hoping someone can help.

i have a wd 500gb external HD that wont show up it says it cannot be read then i get this image when i try to format to any of the options in the drop down box...

can anyone help?

Do you have access to Windows (Boot Camp, VM, other computer)?

In post 1 you said it was a 500GB disk. In post 3, your screen shot indicates Disk Utility thinks it's 2.2TB. Which is correct? This is a new drive? A new case? Where were they purchased?

Difficult to say if this is a drive problem or a USB bridge chipset problem. You need another way to test the drive independently of the case to resolve the ambiguity and know which one to return and swap out for something else.
