I could be wrong about this, but I believe some WD external drives use an internal drive with a non-standard type of connector.

What this means is that you might buy a larger-capacity "bare" drive, then open up the old case and find that the connector inside won't fit the new drive you just bought.

Only way to know is to open the old enclosure and check -first- ...

Another thought:
Keep the old drive as it is now.

Get something like this:

or this:
http://plugable.com/products/pss-dd1

... and add "bare drives" as necessary.

The advantage of the "docking station" is that you can swap drives around as needed. VERY useful to have one of these around.

Disadvantage: they don't look as "cool" sitting on your desk.

(disclaimer: no financial interest in the above products mentioned, just a paying customer)

I opened up and replaced the drive inside my old WD MyBook Studio drive, I got a larger "Green" WD internal drive to replace the old one, formatted it and it is working fine right now. 1TB > 2TB.

The case was very tricky to remove, so be careful not to break any of the tabs that hold it in place, plenty of YouTube videos on this.
