WD My Passport Studio-Formatting

I have just purchased the WD My Passport Studio 500GB.
However I would like to create a partition so that my 250GB OSX HD is backed up time machine, and I would like to use the rest of the space so that I can store files that can be read and wrote to in Windows Vista and Mac OSX, is this possible?? and how big should I make the partitions so that my Mac OSX in backed up in Time Machine is maximised.

How do i go about this?

You can download free software for your mac to allow it to read and write NTFS. On my external drive, NTFS is much slower than OFS+ (NTFS likes to run as USB 1.1, OFS+ runs at USB 2.0). I formatted for OFS+ , then used partition magic (in windows) to create partitions and format the second as NTFS. There may be better ways to do this, but it worked for me. Alternatively you can buy software for $30 that allows windows to read OFS+ and then you don't have to worry about splitting the drive. Currently my time machine backup on a 250GB computer hard drive is ~300GB.
