WD My Passport won't backup Time Machine

I got a WD My Passport for Mac usb 3.0 as a spare external hard drive.

I can't get it to work w/time machine. It always fails.

my imac runs 10.9.5. i realized that the box says it is formatted HFS+J for mac os x lion or mountain lion. is that the problem?

Is there anything I can do to make it work?

That formatting should be fine. Can you post a screenshot of the error?

BTW, you could have saved some money by buying the regular My Passport and formatting it yourself, there is literally zero difference in the hardware.

Can you describe how does it fail? What exactly happens?
