WD Mybook Studio help

I've just updated the firmwire on my device by following the instructions on WD's site. It says install the WD drive manager so i have, but I'm just wondering what it does? Also when my HD turns off after i turn off my iMac the light still fades on and off, does anyone know why this is?

I'm not sure if the updated manager is a even the firmware update.the only update of know of just fixes the capacity light on the front of the external HD

I updated the firmwire on the HD and i downlaoded the Drive Manager software.
