WD Passport HardDrive not working

hey,

my friend has a hard drive that isnt recognised by his imac
under his windows laptop it shows up as usb device under printers and all that
it pops up sometimes and sometimes it doesnt
the cable works and theres a white little light so it does connect

any ideas on how to fix this?

Its probably not formatted to HFS+
