WDS question

So I'm trying to use Airport Express and having a heck of a time doing it.

I've now realized that I cannot extend a wireless network unless the router is WDS. Not completely sure what that means but I am planning on buying a DSL modem/router. Do I need to worry about getting one that is WDS or are they all that way if set correctly?
