Often forums have "spoilers" tag, little parts of your post that become visible after you click a button....

On here we have no such thing. ;)
I and others have text be white to avoid any spoilerific info from getting out to people who don't want to read it.

But when you quote someone, the text shows up and no color will make it "invisible" again.

Is there a way to get these "spoiler" tags? I can post an example of a forum that has them if need be. :D

Yes you can, its just not widely known. The colours #fafafa are used for the invisatext and #eeeeee are for quotes. A spoler button would be nice though to make the whole process easier and not have it dependent on the quoting poster.

It appears that there might be a mod for vbulletin to use spoiler tags.

One could always quote the spoiler info, like so:
Here's some really tasty info about MacWorld 2007. I was chatting with Steve over a biscotti, and he mentioned that...
When quoted, the spoiler is not included.

So, in essence, the "spoiler tag" is just
...spoiler text...
.

Is anyone really going to have the guts to click on Mad Jew's Show Me™ button?

I guess it's a kind of neat and harmless enough feature. I like invisitext because it's more snide, but I'm just sayin'... :)

But if I get an email response the quote text is still there.

Now there's something I haven't thought about in a long time. Mail and news programs used to treat a form feed (^L) as a spoiler marker. I wonder if current mail software still pays attention to that - probably not, it was too simple and useful to survive.

Above comment is valid.

And sometimes if a spoiler is at the end of the post and is only one line, it's easy to miss.

I tried it again and same message. Whatever a spoiler tag is, I don't think we need it anyway. MR already has state-of-the-art forum software.
Sure we do, just wait for the "24" thread to get going again and hear the people complain that they haven't watched the episode yet.

Another vote for a "SPOILERS - CLICK TO SHOW" button or whatever. Another forum I occasionally go to just got this feature, and it's nice. The forum is based on phpBB though, so it's not much help here.

A simple
blabla
which basically makes a quote field, and makes the font color #eeeeee, but changes the "quote" to "spoilers" above the box would do for a quick solution.

Well, I say it's simple, but I'm no Perl programmer, so I wouldn't know :p

Oh I think I've figured out what a spoiler is. They're those captions you get when you're scrolling over a thread title right?

I HATE THOSE THINGS.
No a spoiler is something that some people might not want to read. Like say the ending to a movie.

This actually would be great in threads for TV shows, movies, etc.

Maybe it could be tested just in a couple of threads (like the 24 thread) to try it out?

I have a suggestion: just use ROT-13. Linkety

Run this text in the Terminal: "tr A-Za-z N-ZA-Mn-za-m" (copy/paste everything within the quotes)

You get the insertion point on the line below. Type what you want to transcode, then press Return.

An example of this might be:
"In the latest 42, Wnpx dies! Oh, noes!"
Sticking "Wnpx" into the above instructions, and you get "Jack".

This would work because, as Wikipedia says: "The algorithm is used in online forums as a means of hiding joke punchlines, puzzle solutions, movie and story spoilers, and offensive materials from the casual glance."

It could be fun making people jump through hoops before being able to read posts.

Haven't actually done this, but my current favorite idea is to ROT-13 the text, paste it into TextEdit, take a screenshot, save the file, zip the file, and then post it on a slow server.
Probably best for everyone that I never get a chance to implement that...
