Weak WiFi signal on new Macbook Pro - Airport Express or other to boost?

So I got my new Macbook Pro last week (well, a refurbished 13" non-Retina), to replace my late 2008 unibody Macbook. Been migrating everything over to the new machine all week, upgrading to Mavericks, etc and thought I was good to go and everything running really nicely. But the WiFi Signal seems to be much weaker than it was on my old Macbook.

I share my neighbour's network, with their router and my Macbook both placed optimally for signal strength but it's an old building so the signal was always weak but acceptable on the old machine, and unfortunately it's proved impossible to set up my standalone Linksys extender (which I have used successfully in the past) due to the lack of available settings in the WiFi box's control panel (we've tried everything). If I'm standing right beside the box it's full strength and full speed as it should be.

On the new Macbook Pro the network appears as a weak signal in my apartment but most of the time it just won't connect so I'm looking to amplify the signal with some device at my location. Would an Airport Express/Extreme achieve this, or do those require connection to the router or inputting settings which we may not have access to? Should I be looking at a USB wireless card from TP-Link, Amped Wireless or similar instead? Needs to work with Mavericks of course. Any recommendations?

I will be in the UK in around a month when I might take the new Macbook to an Apple store to see if it's faulty, but for now that's not an option at my location.

Thanks for any help!
