Recently I have discovered the joys of selling my iPhone after a year and upgrading to the newest model (as opposed to keeping the iPhone around for two years). I have found that so long as I get more than half of what I paid for it, it works out to roughly the same expenditure in the long term. Now I wonder whether I should also use this strategy for my MBP (early 2011, 15").
I reckoned that my 2.5y/o MBP is now roughly halfway through its life (please correct me if I am wrong
). Rather than spending a boatload of money in 2 years time, I thought I might sell it now for about 900 euros (just under half what I paid for it) and buy a newer model. That way I'd only have to spend a medium amount of money every two years, as opposed to spending a huge amount of money every 4 or 5 years. There would be the added bonus of always having a (more or less) up-to-date model, instead of running a 4y/o model towards the end.
Does this strategy make as much sense for MBPs as it does for the iPhone? For a start, changes to the MBP line are much more incremental than changes to the iPhone line. Also, MBPs stand the test of time and I am still very satisfied with my 2.5y/o MBP.
On the other hand, I would quite like a lighter laptop (schlepping this 2.5kg thing around gets quite exhausting). And I have to say that my previous two MBPs both died WAY before their time (one after 2 years and another one after a few months), so I am a bit wary of depending on them to stay up and running for at least 2 more years!
So, I'd love to hear your opinion. Are some of my assumptions wrong? Also, what do YOU do? Do you sell and upgrade every X years, or do you completely wear out your MBP and then buy a new one at full price?
