Web Linking Rules

I need some help. I am starting a Blog/Web page and I am wondering about the rules and manners of linking to other web site pages. An example would be, can I copy an image that someone else used from a news/product release page?

Does anyone have information on this topic?

Normally, deep linking is frown upon as it uses up the other party bandwidth. As for images, you need to check with the author of the image for permission. If it is for your own blog and you are just putting stuff like "Powerbook G5 has just arrived!" with an image copied from Apple.com, nobody would care as it is too trivial. But if possible, provides references where you get your images from.
