Recently - last two or three months - a new tab will open randomly and it's always for ebay.com (the sign in page, Chrome automatically fills in my username and password). The view switches to the new tab.

It got to the point where it was opening a new tab every couple minutes. I have avast (free) and Adware Medic. I've run scans of both and the problem diminishes but never goes away.
Today I've run both and it doesn't seem to help anymore.

It's not from hitting a random combination of keys as it happens when I'm only reading. It doesn't help to restart the browser or reboot the system.

It's happened four times while writing this grrr

What could be the cause of the same webpage opening itself so randomly?

Thanks

Hm, installed extension to web browser? This is probably the most possible.

If something want to control your computer, it should be in:
System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Accessibility

You can check Services:
System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Services

Other app? System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Items
Maybe you have installed something strange in:
~/Library/LaunchAgents
or
/Library/LaunchAgents

Thanks for your reply but I didn't find anything questionable.

I do not have an option for "Accessibility" under privacy.

Nothing unusual under keyboard shortcuts, Login Items or Library/LaunchAgents.

I have this option in OS X 10.10.2

Try to disable all browser extensions. You can close all other apps (avast and adware medic too), if it still opens ebay, search for some active process in Activity Monitor. Energy tab shows not hidden apps, but maybe you have some hidden process that you can find in CPU tab. You can quit almost all apps from Energy tab.

The worst solution is to reinstall the system, but certainly it can be found.

Maybe something will show in Activity Monitor when ebay opens? After close all other apps (don't forget to close all menu bar apps), will be easier to find it. For example in CPU tab, select sort by "% CPU", it should show in top 10 when opens.

Not sure if issue resolved..

But it hasn't happened in a few days. Issue doesn't occur in Safari so re-installing Chrome may have fixed it.

Thanks!:D

Issue happens in Safari as well

Yesterday my father had Ventir (described on thesafemac.com) on his MBA. May not be the same, but we reinstalled Mavericks. Better safe then sorry. He had a process called macmin and would get Google search results with MacKeeper and MacMall.
Hope he learned his lesson...

Not infected with Ventir

Also looked in Processes and no 'macmin' process listed.
