when i try to use the webcam on amsn it flags up you are behind a router or firewall.

how can i get around this problem

Well, are you on a router? Have you opened the required ports?

AND have you enabled or disabled anything in your system preferences/security/firewall?

Windows XP has a built in firewall and so do most Macs these days. You might want to make sure you have that setup properly as well.
