WebDAV & VPN

I'm looking for an easy and affordable solution to setup and (almost forget) WebDAV server with VPN access.

This is going into my parents house, so there needs to be a level of simplicity. Basically, the iPhone or iPad will connect to the VPN and allow for WebDAV (file transfers between the storage device and iPhone/iPad). Does anyone make such a standalone device?

I know Western Digital makes a network drive that you can access anywhere and provides 'Cloud' like service, however, this data isn't tied into a VPN. Is there an all-in-one solution or would I need to provide a VPN router? Which VPN routers work with iPhone/iPad?

Why the VPN? Can't you just use a WebDAV solution over SSL?

I believe the security certificate needs to be accepted (unless I purchase one) and some apps error out because there's no code implemented to accept this self-signed cert.

But I guess its worth a shot to look into!
