hello again!

i am going to make a website and i've heard many good things about A Small Orange. it looks really cool, but there is another webhoster that i found in the back of a mac magazine called fatcow.com

they offer AAA LOOTTT for only $99/year, but they only offer one plan. i'm afraid if i ever have to expand my website i might have to pay out the butt in extra bandwith and other stuff i would have to buy

so here are my questions- how much traffic do you get and how much bandwith do you have? is it enough?

What kind of things do you plan on hosting? That's critical to know how much bandwidth and storage you need. As for me and my site, the forums require very little space and less than (maybe) 100 MB a month. However, since the rest of my site is big on Media (movies and pictures), it requires much more bandwidth and space. BTW, my site is currently unavailable, sorry. Post back, and good luck!

cheap virtual server

another option to consider is buying a virtual server. i bought one ($100 / yr) from redwoodvirtual.com and you have your choice of debian or fedora. 2gb storage, 30gb/month bandwidth, and you can load any software on it you want. you want apache? apt-get it. you want nfs? no problem. email? grab postfix. it is way more open so you can do an irc server, or whatever suits your particular nerdy needs.

it has worked really well because i can duplicate my development and production environments. well keep them in perfect lockstep. i don't know if that makes sense. since my production virtual server is the exact same (the software versions, etc) i know once i test it locally on my dev machine it will work exactly the same on my production server and i can just remotely sync it.

all in all, very nice. if you want a simpler webhost ipower.com is decent. it is around $8/month for 1-2gb, 40gb/xfer, 500 emails etc.

I don't know if they're still offering the deal, but DreamHost.com had a deal where you could get a year's worth of their service (2.4GB storage, 120GB/mo transfer, domain name registration) for $9.24 for the first year by signing up for their "Crazy Domain Insane" plan, choosing the "prepay for 12 months" option, and entering "777" as a promo code.

You can see if it still works without ever entering credit card info. I got a domain that way just to play with (it was too cheap not to), and I'm pretty happy with DreamHost. However, I've heard stunningly good things about A Small Orange and, should I have a real use for my website, I'd consider using them.

Hey, these plans look pretty good! I am looking for a vps as well to run some of my java server applications but most of dedicated servers and vps cost a lot. thanks for the link

(it seems that they are running at full capacity now)

i think i am going to go with ASO because even though it costs more for month, the customer service (for a non-member) is outstanding! i got a reply within a four minutes of sending an email.

also, ASO allows multiple domains to go to different sites on the same plan, whereas i would have to buy two different FatCow accounts to have different sites. :mad:

so now i just have to wait until january 27th!
 
I have never really checked my bandwith usage to be honest. I have a poker site that gets some traffic, but its just friends. I do know that I use surpasshosting now and they offer even more than FatCow (a former favorite of mine). For example for $65/year you get
