Website Critique

I'd like to see the header in a contrasting color or value.

Nice and clean site... a little sterile for the mission.

Can we sneak in a touch of color?

It would help make the site feel more "positive"... just a bit.
 
I hate the pop-up thingie.

Few things turn me off about a site as much as one of those.
 
I agree with citizenzen.

Maybe you can introduce a vibrant background image which will tie in with the concept and bring it all to life a little.

Also, consider instead of the pop-up, an about page?

Other notes:

  • There are few inconsistencies on the main page type with the width of the content areas and some have rounded corners, some don't.
  • Maybe move the header down the width of the border so the border goes all the way round rather than being cut off at the top. Don't know if this will look better or not, but it's worth seeing :)

Your weight-lossss ads are really scammy looking.

Thumbnail are really really tiny.
 
I have to agree with everyone else, it looks like a plain vanilla word press install. Starting to make good use of white space which helps readability but it's lacking any real personality.

Look at this for a simple white site dealing with fixing the world. http://www.one.org/us/
Bold use of space, colour and content
 
Better... Nice customisation of a theme.

Initial thoughts:

  • Home - What's the world on a leaf for?
  • Home - 'Find us on facebook' doesn't have rounded corners. Both this and the twitter button should have corners consistent with the 'Create an account' button.
  • Home - Links are blue - doesn't seem to fit with the site's colour scheme.
  • View All Issues - Content off-centre (larger margin on the right than left).
  • View All Issues - Category links are blue - doesn't fit as mentioned above.
  • View All Issues - Selecting 'long term' makes the 'post block' divs stack strangely toward the bottom.
  • Post - Information list on the right has hover effects - makes me want to click them. Save hover effects for links.
  • Post - 'login' & 'register' links are blue - this doesn't fit with the site.
  • Whole site - Footer is too tall - maybe remove the top margin from #footer #footer-widgets

There is a bit of confusion with the two globes, one in the layout and one in the logo, they clash because of the different, yet kinda similar style.

On a personal note - im really tired of this kind of webdesign, they are EVERYWHERE... the horizontal segmentation thing looks wordpress-like, standard and similar to so many other websites. But that is my personal opinion.
 
I agree with everyone. it looks too plain jane. Add some texture.The category selection should match the site. The login register should be a different color. The world on the leaf should be more centred . I think the header is a little big, of the size of the website. If the globe on the top is draw, (cartoon) Style the globe with the leaf should be (cartoon) style too. or vice versa.
