I have created a website in GoLive CS2. When it is viewed on Safari and Firefox and Opera on a MAC it looks fine, as well as on Firefox on a PC. It is also fine on Internet Explorer on PCs - MOST of the time.
However, on some PCs using Internet Explorer all of the jpgs and pngs on the pages appear to be in "gray boxes".

Please help, as I have just uploaded this site for a client and they are hoping to notify all of their dealers of the new site tomorrow. So far out of the, maybe, 7 or 8 people who have checked out the site, two people are "seeing" it this way. Needless to say, they are very upset.

I am attaching a jpg of what a section of it looks like on safari and firefox and the "problem" version seen on some PCs.
Thanks!

as seen in safari:

Just a note, you can't just link to files when they're still on your computer, you have to upload them onto the internet for us to see.

Some versions of Internet Explorer have problems displaying images with any transparent areas and, instead, will display the grey box that you are describing. The only way for YOU to fix this is to take all the jpgs and pngs and fill in the transparent parts using an image editor. The clients should really upgrade to a newer browser, as this is something from the IE 6 days.

It does sound like a transparency issue. There's a few fixes out there like this one.

As far as attaching images, look below the text box within the Additional Options area and look for the Manage Attachments button. Seeing the site would be more helpful than seeing a picture of the problem though, in he event it's a CSS issue or something.

I was able to upload the images, so if you would be kind enough to take a look at the problem again and let me know if you think the problem is still a transparency issue.

I might note that the person reporting this said it didn't look this way when I had the files uploaded to the server in a separate folder so that the public couldn't get to the site while I was working on it. (this fact seems extremely weird)

Internet Explorer 6 and earlier can't handle transparent PNGs without help (usually javascript). What file format are your images saved as?

I think you're right, because these images ARE pngs. On some of the screen pictures they sent me of other pages in the site there are a few jpg images that do not have the gray boxes around them.
I can change most of the images to jpgs.
However in the case of the "swirl" artwork in the top corner, it is in a layer on top of the purple so it needs to have a transparent backgound.
The top navigation is also made of png images on a layer to set over the purple. I do realize I don't really know much about this and appreciate all the help.

I have done a few other sites that don't seem to have this problem. For example http://www.munimula.com. But come to think of it there may not be any png files in them.

Did I mention that I'm working in GoLive (moan... I know I need to learn dreamweaver, and fast. Problem is I'm a Graphic Designer (and have been doing print for 30 years!) Right now I work 10 hour days, try to do some extra freelance work on evening and weekends - like this job - and now trying to find time to learn Dreamweaver, when I barely know web stuff at all. Yikes!)

You don't need to convert all your PNGs, you just need to add some javascript to trick IE6 into seeing them correctly. As long as you don't use transparent PNGs for background images, everything will look good after you do apple the js.

Just do a Google search for "IE6 png transparency fix" and choose the method that makes the most sense to you.
