Website with Gallery + CSS?

Hi everyone.
I'm trying to make a simple website, with the following:

- Header/title at the top
- Left column (maybe a floating section) with the links/navigation to the rest of the pages
- Images in the middle/right side of the pages...
I'd like 2 columns and the pictures stacked under one another...

I'd love not to be able to use tables anymore, just looks old and dated.
Can anyone please advise where to start for this little project?

I have some knowledge of CSS and HTML... not familiar with PHP or other codes.
I'm up for looking at templates, or codes etc etc.

Google free wordpress themes and browse until your eyes bleed.
