This weeks theme: Local Character.

Every place has something that makes it unmistakably itself.

I live in a town that is defined by its 18th C. Georgian Architecture built of its local golden stone… people travel from around the world to come and see this place that has been here since the Romans built some hot baths.

I guess that is the broad local character.

So have a go and show us the things that matter to you in the broad locality — a detail, a rhythm, a mood, a person or go for the broad sweeping view.

This week, show what gives your local surroundings their distinct personality.

Show us the essence of where you live — not just the postcard view, but the real texture of your local world.

It is a very broad subject, but hopefully that will inspire a broad range of entries.

Any questions? Please ask! I will clarify as best I can.

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work. No AI generated images.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week’s winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme; after that it defers to 2nd place.)
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest will end on Monday, 27 October 2025, 17:00 (GMT).

Contest is closed!

Thank you very much to everyone who submitted a photo.

I shall be back in a few hours with the results.

It is getting into evening now UK time, but I'll have the results up tomorrow morning first thing… just after I have fed the cat. #priorities

🙂

The Results are In!

Judging this took a couple glasses of Red wine in the evening and two mugs of tea this morning. 🙂

Thank you all for participating.
I appreciate it and as always it is great to see how we respond to the same brief.

@cjsuk
Brentford… Contrast of old and new.
The friction between the bohemian, rustic canalboats and sleek new flats is a strong, specific narrative of a changing / gentrifying locale.
Having lived in London many years, the constant change is very relatable to me.

@goldmac2006
I like the clean, engineered look — but it lacks the distinctive social, historical, or unromantic texture found in the other entries.
A wider lens might have helped here — really play up the perspective while giving us more inofrmation of the setting behind the nets.

@oblomow
Bikes at Rammstein Concert…
Even without being told where we are, I picked up on that yup, this is the Netherlands.
I love the concept — if only a bit more had been made of the knitted texture of the masses of bikes. A closer crop?

@C0ncreteBl0nde
I definitely appreciate the no frills, stark and unromaticised mood.
I only wish the processing had been less intrusive.

@someoldguy
Now as with the NYC fire hydrants below, here is an image that is globally understood and loved — A Diner like this is one of those big local markers.
Again movies have made us hugely familiar with these places. We all know there are stories in there.

@_timo_redux_
OK. Now this really tells me where we are!
This is an image that made me smile — like recognising a familar face.
New York… the Brownstones, Fire Hydrant spraying, Kids having fun.
Even though to me it is such a non-universal social ritual, through the media we are all familiar with this.

@Janichsan
While this is a lovely shot, it is almost too universal. For me it captures a season and a mood more than a unique locality.
If there had been some unique-ish anchor — bench, or architectural detail — it would have worked even better. Taken it from maybe a „Universal“ into a Local“ Park.

@kendallm
Now, this is so specific! Las Vegas innit?
I joke. This is a lovely shot of a side canal, gondola and all.
The Palazzo at the end is just a tad over exposed and if you could have made a bit more of the wonderful texture this would be a stunner.

@StrollerEd
Edinburgh…
What’s not to love about this?
As a lapsed Architect this makes my heart go boom.
Just a pity it is more of a general view and lacks some specificity. Into the gardens, grabbing a shot of some people using the park with these great buildings forming the stage.
I know I know! Easier said than done. 🙂

Stepping up on the podium today are:

Ha!

I did think about this one, but as was said when Glasgow shocked Auld Reekie when it won the European Capital of Culture, "a castle is not enough" ...
