Hi folks - We're all about latest and greatest here, so I would like to solicit opinions. Basically, new battery or new phone?

My 12 mini battery is crying for service, and my first impulse was that it was a good excuse to get a new phone and let Apple recycle the old one. It then occurred to me that I could save a bundle of cash by just replacing the battery and using it for a few more years.

Pros (of getting a new phone): New, shiny; bigger screen for my old eyes; much better camera
Cons: I like the mini form factor. Slips in and out of my pocket. New phones just feel heavy, but maybe I could get used to that. The usual environmental concerns with disposing of perfectly good tech.

I'm wondering if I'm missing anything. I use an iPad or a laptop for real work, and most of my reading outside the bathroom 😉
I'd love to have a better camera - the shots of the Moon or sunsets would be vastly improved by having a more powerful telephoto lens.
What about obsolescence? Any insight on when iOS won't support the 12 mini? It already seems like some apps aren't aware that smaller screens exist.
Do the newer models behave better with respect to RFIC detection? I was playing around with some RFIC tags a while ago, the 12 mini seemed kind of laggy with detection, or had troubles with detecting the chips if too much metal was nearby.

The phone is my only phone - no landline - so having something reliable is a must. But, no complaints about the mini on that score currently. I did see a suggestion that some models see better cell reception than others. Of course, this also depends on your provider and where their towers are located...

Enough ramble - What do you think?

I would just replace the battery and worry about a new phone later. I don't see why there is a need to buy a new phone when you can just swap the battery. Furthermore if you are worried about the environment then get a new battery is much more environment friendly as there is less waste.

Of course, the new battery should last a few more years so you can consider again in a few years.

Or get a 16e now. That might be enough of an upgrade for you.
I got one of those for my Mom 😊
I make use of MagSafe a lot, so that's a 👎🏻
I haven't tried the camera, but I'd be mostly inclined to go for a new phone for the camera, so I'm looking for something better than the 16e.

I would replace to a new battery because it’s not expensive, and once the 17 will be available, go check it in the store and see if you like it.
I ended up replacing the battery in an old iPad, then regretting not just trading it in on a new purchase, as I eventually got a new iPad anyway. I don't want to do that again.
(The good news is that my ex is now enjoying reading e-books on the old one, so the battery purchase didn't sting after all)
