So I recently purchased a X-25m 160GB SSD for my Early 2008 17'' MBP. The SSD is replacing a Seagate 7200rpm 500GB drive which I am putting in the optibay. Due to the speed limitations of PATA the clear choice is to put the SSD in the original SATA drive bay and the HD in the optibay. For some odd reason whenever I put the SSD in the SATA bay and the HD in the optibay the MBP will just not go past the blank grey screen and eventually show the question mark folder icon. Keep in the mind the 500GB drive is now blank and the SSD has a fresh copy of SL. Frustrated, I swapped the two drives and rebooted the machine with the SSD in the optibay (PATA) and the HD in the SATA drive bay and everything works fine, both drives recognized in Finder. Slower than I was expecting for an SSD, but working. Determined to solve this issue I switched the 500GB drive with another drive I had lying around and put the SSD back in the SATA slot and the HD in the optibay. Interestingly enough it booted find and both drives are recognized. So I have concluded that the combination of the 500GB drive in the optibay doesn't work and have been forced to settle for PATA speeds with the SSD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
RECAP:
SSD in SATA bay + 500gb HD in optibay - no boot
500gb HD in SATA bay + SSD in optibay - boots correctly
SSD in SATA bay + different 250gb HD in optibay - boots correctly
250 gb HD in SATA bay + SSD in optibay - boots correctly
Attempted to reset PRAM and SMC, no luck. When stuck on the grey screen I can't even hold down option to get to the boot menu.
