For the past week I have been experiencing some weird behaviour from my mac.

First, I tried to trash some files on the desktop and got this notice:

And then I started seeing things like this on my desk when I downloaded files. I know it is normal for them to look like this when the file is still downloading, but what's happening is that it remains that way even after the download is done:

Any ideas? I'm at a loss here

If you haven't already done so, begin by restarting your Mac. That resolves many problems with deleting files. For problems deleting items or emptying the trash, you may find some useful ideas here:

The deleting problem was solved after a restart, like you said, but any ideas as to what might have caused it or how to prevent a repeat?

The file issue is ongoing, tho :(

Any number of things could have caused the trash problem. Restarting solves many minor issues, and is a good first step in any troubleshooting.

As for the other issue, try re-indexing your drive: If that fails to index, enter the following command in Terminal:
sudo mdutil -i on "/Volumes/your drive name"

I'll try that now and hope it helps. Thanks :)
