hey,
is there any way that i can set the dock to hide, but it shows itself whenever i go to the desktop.

ie, it hides when any window is open?

any way? besides pressing Command-Option-D all the time

System Prefs -> Dock. Check the "Automatically Hide and Show the Dock"

I think the OP realises this. What I think he is after is a way to have "Automatically Hide/Show the dock" switched on, yet when he is viewing the desktop, he wants the Dock to be always visible.

At least that was how I read his request

This is actually a good idea. I'd love to be able to apple+tab to the dock, where it is always hidden until I apple+tab to it. In essence it would run like its own app, hiding when I switch to another app.

Now somebody make it happen!

If you want to hide/show the dock using the keyboard type:

option-command-d

But again, I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. You can also change this combination by going to System Prefs -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts and scroll down to the dock setting.
