Say my short login is 'rinse'. I was looking on my disk today, and noticed that for some reason there is now a "/Users/rinse 1" folder, in addition to "/Users/rinse". Any idea why? I use FileVault, but I have never noticed this before and it must have happened in the past week or so.

There doesn't seem to be anything stored there --- just the usual new user template layout.

What's going on? Can I nuke the folder without worrying?

I would back up everything in your home folder just to be safe and then delete the rinse 1 folder. You can just drag the entire home folder to either a CD, DVD, External HDD, or another computer for back up.

Before you delete that folder, back up everything just to be safe, and then turn off File Vault and see if the folder goes away. That might take about an hour or so to decrypt everything in your home folder, but its worth a shot. As long as everything is backed up then you should have nothing to worry about.
