I have an iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1.2. I use emojis in my texts from time to time, never see any problems. However, when I send an email with an emoji in it, it doesn't seem to show up correctly on my phone (and my computer) under some circumstances.

I put an emoji in an email message - it looks fine. I BCC myself on emails from my phone. When I receive the copy on the very same phone - in the folder view (where I can only see the first line or two of the email) I can see the emoji just fine. When I open the message to see the whole thing, the emoji appears as two "question mark - in diamond" icons. On my computer (macbook pro retina, OS X 10.8.5, thunderbird 24.6.0), I also don't see the emoji, just the question marks. I checked in a web browser email reader and I saw the emoji just fine.

What is even stranger though, is that I got a reply to my message with my original message quoted. In the reply, those emoji show up just fine (on both my phone and my computer).

What on earth is going on?
