Big Sur: I'm copying a huge file (709 gigs FCPX library) from external drive A to external drive B.

According to iStatMenus and, it all goes through the internal boot drive first 😱 WTF is that? It's a "useractivityd" process. There's constant writing to the boot drive, its free space goes down proportional to the copy progress of the file. The boot drive will run out of free space, let's see what happens then.

Why the hell does the copy go through the boot drive?
