A friend sent me a file which ended .avi, but quiktime caant play it nor can real player, anyone know an app. which can?

You probably need the Divx codec... Just my guess... Here:

try vlc. oh, google it. something like www.videolan.org/vlc or something. worked for me when i had the same problem.

I either use MPlayerOSX or VLC when opening .avi files, and I'd recommend them both. Wouldn't choose one or the other though, as there are some files one will open that the other won't, and vice-versa.
