I just started noticing what sounds like hard drive noise coming from my MBP. It's like a grinding/gargling sound. I just had my Macbook in for repair and they replaced the hard drive. I have the Hitachi HTS545025B9SA02.

It's weird because it started doing it, then it stopped. I also noticed when I lean my macbook vertically, it stops.

What could it be?!

My 08 MBP made sounds like this, that went away when held it differently or pressed down on areas of the keyboard. Although it wasn't the HD. In my case it was coming from the left fan, a piece of clear plastic was lodged underneath it, no idea how it got there. You could use iStat pro to see if both fans run at the same speed, if not, you could have a similar problem.

istat pro only lists 1 fan; Exhaust fan.
