I'm not sure if it's just me, but try the following:

1. Tap SMS
2. Tap create a new message
3. Under the speech bubble where you type your SMS, type in "wee", then followed by "L"

Instead of L, K appears. Once again, I'm not sure if it's just me or there is a glitch.

Edit: I'm on firmware 2.1, if that matters.

Not a glitch... that's the way the keyboard works.
The iPhone is expecting you to type a 'K' next, so the hit zone for the K gets larger, in this case, overtaking the L. You have to backspace and then hit the L until the iPhone gets used to you writing whatever weird word you're trying to write.

Oh. I remember reading somewhere that typing "weell" will have the word auto corrected to "we'll" which is exactly what I wanted.

Thanks anyway.

typing weree also corrects it to we're - the iphone keyboard is very clever... as long as you know how to use it!!
