Im at home . . . have the lightening cable plugged in along with the white earbuds plugged in . . .

In the bottom left corner of the screen I get an icon that looks like the old school Nintendo controller . . . I click it and it goes to a black screen saying 'connecting' but then it connects to nothing

what is this icon?

weird icon in bottom corner of screen

It's an icon for an app on your phone. Do you have some sort of remote control app or app that can be controlled by an app?

It's appearing because Location Services says you are in close proximity.

There's also a linked icon in your status bar, perhaps you have a device linked in some way wirelessly?
