Everything is working after an SMC reset. The keyboard part of the story is really strange. I am wondering how this was possible.

Yesterday, the trackpad started having problems with taps. Moving around was fine, taps mostly worked, but taps on some things were not firing.

This morning, taps not working at all, had to hookup a spare mouse to click on anything. However, wired USB Mac keyboard was dead. I hooked an old keyboard, same model, except it has some keys that do not work well, that is why I stopped using it.

Shutdown, restart - no effect.

After a little searching, I did an SMC reset (good thing I remembered how, because I read three articles that left a step out but I remembered that part of it). On this Mac, to SMC reset,
1. Shutdown normally.
2. Unplug power cord
3. Press and hold the power button for five seconds. You can hear do some clicks.

Plugged the cord in and fired it up, now the track pad and the completely dead keyboard are working fine.

The strangest thing is the keyboard. Why would SMC reset bring life back to what appeared to be a dead keyboard?

Any ideas?
