Noticed this a couple of days ago. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the cause of this is, and if it's a common problem on other MBPs. It does bug me a bit, but it's not really a big deal.

Looks like light is somehow bleeding through into the grill, from the keyboard backlights, i honestly don't know how that's happened though...

Hmm...it's definitely not the backlight keyboard. I tried adjusting the keyboard brightness but it's not changing.

Mmm...I found out something else. Apparently it isn't an actual light source emitting from below, but instead it's reflecting light, because everytime I cast a shadow over it, it disappears.

Still wish to find out what it is though.

As I understand it, the ambient light sensors are in the speaker grills of the pre-unibody macbooks. when you cover both speaker grills with your hands, the screen will dim.

Perhaps this is a hardware test light for the left side ambient light sensor. It may be that when exposed to light, emits light and when removed from it, the light turns off.

Ask Apple because I'm curious now.

Be cool if you could program a sequence into it and make all the holes emit light a bit like that helicopter does on war of the worlds when they're trying to communicate .
Or

maybe it's the Apple umpa lumpas trying to get a message out :p

Take it to the Apple Store Genius Bar if it really bothers you, but I will admit that looks kinda cool. I wish ALL the dots lit up though, THAT would be cool.

Sounds like something reflective could have fallen in the grill hole. Could try sucking it out with a hand vac or flipping your machine over and gently shaking it till it falls out.
