Curious if anyone else has experienced a crash on Lion like this.....I've had this happen only twice.

I'll be working along (or as of the last one, not even touching the machine), iTunes both times has been open and playing something. Suddenly, apps will just start crashing. And the Crash Reporter windows will popup. This last time Finder, Dock, Chrome and rcd all crashed.

Now when this happens, iTunes is still playing in the background. But it's like the entire UI is messed up. I can launch some apps.....like Activity Monitor, where I can SEE all my apps are open....however, the Dock doesn't have any open lights under the apps.

Mission Control will show the apps still in their respective spaces.

I can open terminal, but can't type in the window.

The first time this happened....weeks ago.....I manually Quit apps through Activity Monitor.....and after about 15 minutes of playing around....eventually I managed to logout.

This time.....I quit apps again through activity monitor, but couldn't get the system to come back or log me out. I did eventually get the system to restart.

Other than the crash reports for Finder, Dock, Chrome and rcd.......nothing weird in the logs.

It's almost like the system itself it up.....but the whole System UI is whacked. :p

I did try to kill SystemUIServer, but it never came back correctly.

Anyone seen anything like this?

Disk checks fine. Permissions repaired.

Here's a bunch of the errors when it happens:

I am experiencing this on a regular basis, like once every 2 days. Very annoying.

I hope this will be solved in 10.7.2...

testing for app issues

Have you tried shutting down certain apps and running w/o them. If I were you I would try running w/o CoverSutra (or another app) and seeing if you can replicate the problem. This was the only way I could get the 3 computers I have running Lion stable.

The only reason I used CoverSutra in the above was I had issues with it many moons ago.

I used this very basic method to find (yesterday) that Sophos AV was causing my systems to freeze once the system locked itself out due to inactivity. Nothing fancy, but I have had no issues since.

Good luck.

Yep had this as well even after a fresh install of Lion. Never had a problem on SL. Hopefully Apple will get this mess fixed soon.

Yeah I thought about that, but I'm trying some other things like clearing all caches, reset PRAM, etc.

Have another thread going over here as well:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/16208056

At least two of us see DebugSymbols at the start of the crash.

I'm hoping that since 10.7.1 wasn't much of a patch, that 10.7.2 will bring a lot more changes, and not just a bunch of iCloud stuff :p

Apple promised with the release of 10.7.1 that all such issues are been resolved (http://drive-recovery-mac.blogspot.com/2011/09/mac-os-x-lion-updates-mac-os-x-1071.html) but still the number are not less who are complaining about the same issues even I am also among them. Lets hope it this will solve out with the launch of 10.7.2 as Apple has already said this update will be major one. Let sit cross fingered.

Considering the 10.7.1 update was only 79.29 MB (and it was even less through software update)......it didn't fix crap!

It was a quick fix to some supposedly high profile bugs....which after looking at these forums seems most issues still remain.

happened to me in 10.7.4

This (exactly as OP describes it) just happened to me in OS X 10.7.4. This morning I was greeted by several applications crasched:

9kwmdmc000c0o.png

and the UI was all ****ed up.

This was the first time it happened to me.

I'm worried that it might be hardware related, i.e. bad memory or my SSD going bad (I have a Early 2011 MBP with an 512 GB Samsung 830) but reading this thread it sounds like something software related.

Do somebody have more info about this?
Have it stop happening for you guys?

I have since moved on to Mountain Lion and haven't had the issue again thus far.

Well, just had my first crash of this type on Mountain Lion.

Guess Apple didn't fix it in ML.
