sometimes the light on my magsafe cable goes out, even though my MacBook Pro says it's charging in macOS.
I have a late 2011 15" macbook pro, 2.2ghz.

nope. I did notice it's not an original apple charger.. can that have something to do with it?It could be a failing LED in the charger. Do you have another Macbook to test the charger or another charger to use with your Macbook?
Yes, that might have something to do with it but I'm not 100% sure.nope. I did notice it's not an original apple charger.. can that have something to do with it?
oh okay. it only happens sometimes.. so...Yes, that might have something to do with it but I'm not 100% sure.
what kind of warnings?I have seen posts with dire warnings about 3rd party magsafe chargers. I have not used 3rd party chargers so I can't comment on these warnings.
The only way to be sure would be to get an original charger. They are expensive from Apple so I look for them at my local thrift shops and online websites such as Craigslist.
oh okay, I'll look for an original charger then. They are unsafe because they do not stop charging when they should, they overheat, they don't put out as much wattage as they should, they don't have adequate protection circuits.

I agree with @Audit13, and I’d go so far as to say to replace the charger immediately and don’t use the third party any longer. If the LED is going out, I’d be worried what else might be failing. It may seem like a lot, but think of a $60 genuine charger from Apple like insurance, that cord is what (partly at least) protects your computer from getting fried.oh okay, I'll look for an original charger then.

Unfortunately I can’t read everything it says on the website, but I’d make sure that it is an Authentic Apple charger, not just an OEM.
so this one?Unfortunately I can’t read everything it says on the website, but I’d make sure that it is an Authentic Apple charger, not just an OEM.
Personally if it were me, I’d just order one from Apple, there are a lot of knock off ones out there that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
with 1 star reviews?Looks like Apple.nl is selling the adapter for 89 Euros too: https://www.apple.com/nl/shop/produ...apter-voor-15-en-17-inch-macbook-pro?fnode=8b
Yeah, I’d just get it from there. Also I’m not sure about the warranties in your area, but in the USA, if you buy the power cord from Apple direct, you’ll also get a one year warranty for the power cordLooks like Apple.nl is selling the adapter for 89 Euros too: https://www.apple.com/nl/shop/produ...apter-voor-15-en-17-inch-macbook-pro?fnode=8b
You have to keep in mind that the star system in the Apple store has a lot of trolls with upset people. They are usually complaining about the design. The genuine Apple charger is the safest way to charge your laptop.with 1 star reviews?
and btw I have had this problem with old MacBooks I've had, with original apple chargers, and the light went out on those too. so...
yeah I'll probably just get it. the macbook I have is prone to issues anyway, it's the 15" late 2011.. so if it dies one way or another I'll just replace it. I'll buy that magsafe adaptor and let's hope I don't have issues with it..Yeah, I’d just get it from there. Remember. If you use an aftermarket charger and let’s say it fries your MacBook because of poor circuitry, that could result in you have to replace the logic board, which at Apple can easily be over $600.

How much dirt are we talking? It turned out to be dirt
oh okay. i suppose i could clean it. does that mean i won't have to buy a genuine charger? because those are expensive...I've had this problem with a genuine magsafe charger.
It turned out to be dirt. After cleaning both the plug and socket, the problem never came back.
