Weird network problem

I don't belong to any PC forums, so I thought I'd post this here first.

I purchased a Windows XP computer, and for the life of me, I can't get the thing to connect to the internet, even when it's directly connected to the modem.

I've tried the onboard ethernet and a PCI ethernet card and neither work.

I take the computer to a friend's house and use his network and it works.

My internet works of course. I'm posting behind it now.

Any troubleshooting ideas?
