I received this email from PayPal and assumed it was a scam, so I didn’t click on it. But, I went to the app on my phone and sure enough, I have $500 in my account from this transaction.

I’ve sold tons of phones over the years, so I certainly can’t remember which this is referring to. I vaguely remember someone saying they didn’t receive a phone, filed a complaint with PayPal, but I was able to show it was received and signed for. But, I can’t recall any other instance of a weird transaction.

I’m actually not sure what to do? I have no idea what it’s for, but have $500 in my PayPal account now? Anyone ever heard of anything like this happening?

I would still assume it's a scam of some kind.

Even if it's not a scam, PayPal can reverse transactions for what looks like up to 75 days after the funds were deposited (search terms: paypal chargeback). So if you decided to spend the money after say 60 days, PayPal could still reverse it and leave you hanging.

I'd also look up the details of the prior complaint where you showed delivery and signature, so you can tell PayPal about that possibly being the origin.

And I'd definitely contact PayPal about this windfall, because they might be aware of something similar happening to others, and they could see a pattern that you're unaware of.

The attachment with the message is absolutely comical. That was totally written by somebody with horrible grammar, and not to denigrate anyone, but likely it’s a scammer overseas, probably China.

Here is a link to report any type of activity that seems suspicious to PayPals back-track team.
