hi, trying to get my tv to work as a second monitor, but this happens on both the tv and the netbook when i plug it in using a vga cable, says auto adjusting on the tv then it screws up the picture

i've tried doing this on a proper monitor and it works fine, didn't have to do anything, why the problem with the tv, is it cause my netbook is using a 1024x600 resolution and it can't display it?
when i first plugged it in i set it to mirror the display, so is it just remembering this setting when i plug the tv in, which means i can't change the resolution on the laptop for the tv?
