I have wifi at home, so to conserve battery I only use edge when at home.

I'm noticing that on my iPhone 4, when I make or receive calls on EDGE, I hear an intermittent popping or clicking type of noise. At first I thought the person I was talking to kept touching the microphone on their phone.

Sometimes I can hear it on 3G, but not as loud as when on EDGE. I've called my other phone and placed my iPhone 4 on Hold, and I was STILL able to hear the noise.

Can someone please make a call on Edge to another phone and stay on the line for a few minutes to see if the same happens for them? It gets really annoying after a while. I can hear it when using the handset earpiece and also the earphones(which is REALLY annoying because it's more audible).

Hi

I have experienced the same popping and clicking sounds. Mine is mire clicking than popping. It started when I received my iPhone 4. Never had it on my 3GS.

I have never had that on any Iphone or in fact any GSM phone I have owned and I have been with ATT/CINGULAR/PAC BELL WIRELESS since October 1997

I am located in Los Angeles. Where are you located?

hmm great now is this Att network problem or another iPhone 4 problem?

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. Well, it could be popping or clicking...I didn't know exactly how to describe it lol. I'm on AT&T as well.

I never experienced it on my 3GS either, but it's definitely there on the iPhone 4.

Quick question...was your 3GS on iOS4? I never updated my 3GS, so maybe it's an OS problem.

Would love some more feedback...I'm going to see if I can get a recording of the noise.

Yes my 3gs was on IOS 4 for a few days before I got my iPhone 4 but I never heard it.

I have it on edge as I don't make calls on 3g and I only use 3g when I need data. I don't know if it's a network thing or phone thing. I don't really want to get it replaced because my screen is good and the whole bumper reception issue isn't all that bad on this phone but the clicking is annoying when u r trying to have a conversation. I think u can use the voice recorder function to capture the noise.

I've attached a recording of the clicking. Please listen to the entire thing!

Basically, I called my voicemail and pressed 1 to listen to a message, then held the mute button so it could put the call on hold.

If you can't download the zip attachment then you can download the mp3 of the clicking here:

Anyone else having this problem as well?????? It's annoying as hell on a conversation longer than 10 minutes.

Snapping, crackling and popping? It sounds like you have yourself a Rice Krispies infestation. :D

I listened to your audio clip and can hear what you're talking about. That doesn't happen on my phone but it sounds familiar. I think my old cell phones did this at times. I haven't used Edge on purpose since the iPhone 3G was released.

Sorry that I'm not any help. I hope you're able to find an answer to your problem.

I'm getting the same thing. Mine sound kind of metallic. Its starting to get annoying too.

EDIT: Also, I'm currently working in a town that has no 3G. All Edge here.

It's increasingly noticeable with earphones...VERY annoying.

I took my phone in to RadioShack today and the lady was able to hear the clicking noise. She told me they'd call me when they get more phones in. I hope the replacement doesn't do this.

I can't get the file to open to listen to it. I want to hear if what your phone is doing to see if mine is the same.

You mean you aren't able to download it? Or you can't open the Mp3 file????

Did you try the rapidshare link?

I haven't noticed it while I'm talking on the phone but it does happen after I dial a number.

I had a similar issue and this occurred during a phone call with another iphone 4. I heard some sort of "echo" or "UFO" sound and it doesn't stop until I hang up the call.

I am going to return the iphone and rebuy it, so my return date will be extended to another 30 days to test if the issue reoccur.

Thanks everyone for your input. You guys are a great community. The same can't be said for the pricks in the Apple Support forums. I asked the same question there and this is what I got:

I kind of agree with some of those comments. I am not sure why you are going to the hassle of turning off 3G at home. It's not like you won't have access to an outlet and need to conserve the battery.

I have a 3G iPhone and just let it do it's thing on the 3G network. Yes, I have Wifi at home, but the only times I turn anything off is when I am flying or in a foreign country. Seems silly to me that you are putting up with these EDGE artifacts while you can have no issues on 3G apparantly. And all for what? A few extra minutes of battery power???

I noticed this same very issue yesterday. I was on my iP4 with 4.0.1 talking to my cousin who was on a landline. She kept asking if I was still there. I was using a corded headset (not the one Apple provided). Never had this issue with my 3G.

iphone 4 ticking noise

I have iPhone 4 and I'm also experiencing the ticking noise.

I had my iPhone 4 replaced and it is still occurring.

It happens on long calls, with another iPhone 4 or 3GS (I haven't experienced it when I call other Phones than iPhone, but people I call the most have Apple iPhone).

When I conference somebody in, that is when it usually happens and I have to hang up and call again directly without my other associate on the line with me on his iPhone 4, or 3GS (he has both).

I tried going away from my office, bluetooth on/off, wifi on/off, nothing seems to make a difference, except...when I wiggle the phone left and right, the ticking noise seems to be going away most of the times, for a minute or 2 then it comes back

Also my impression was that it wasn't happening from the very beginning since I had the iPhone 4...but again Apple Store gave an immediate replacement, even though they couldn't tell there was anything wrong with it

One of the possibilities is this could be possibly ATT network issue, network not being able to keep up, causing the click..click.click and robot like sounds

any thoughts?

I have the same problem only when i use the 3g network.
I have iphone 3Gs and my network is CYTAMOBILE in Cyprus.
The network company try to found the problem.
When i have any news, i will post here

Real problem

Well... the clicking/popping noise happens when your iPhone 4 loses connection to the 3G/EDGE network during a call and tries to reconnect without any success. It only reconnects when the call is ended.

The question is: why would the 3g/edge connection drop when we're on a call?

I believe it has something to do with the second mic.

Any suggestions?
