weird problem with empty boxes

i have no idea what's up with this, but these empty boxes keep showing up on my computer...it was fine a couple days ago, then i let my dad use it and this is what's happening. They're just black-lined empty boxes that show up in weird places. Like there's one around my hardisk icon and one will pop up in the middle of the screen when I'm trying to read something. It's really annoying and distracting. anybody have any idea?

Can you post a screen shot of this happening?

Yeah, we're gonna need pictures, because what you're describing sounds a lot like the standard way OSX highlights a selected icon, if you click somewhere else on your desktop, does the highlight go away?
