My friend is having a weird issue with his Microsoft Word. When he opens the program, instead of having a blank document there is box with text in it (see attached picture). Any time you click to open a blank document, this is what you get. He has never used this text before and has had this issue since he installed Office 2004.

Does anybody know how to get rid of this or set the default to a blank document? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

I would guess that one of the templates has got screwed up. When Word opens a new blank document, it looks at a template file called Normal.dot, and opens that.

To change it, search for Normal.dot and open this file. If I am right, then the text box will appear in that file. Delete the text box, and save the file. Then, when you next open a blank document, it should be blank.

You can also use this method to change default fonts, styles etc.

If this doesn't work, then let me know. I am at work and not at my Mac at the moment, but if the problem persists, then I will have a look at home tonight.

That did it. Thanks for the help!

I've had quite a few wierd quirks with Word 2k4. The worst of them was some things mysteriously being underlined yet not actually being underlined that would put massive lined-page breaks upon hitting the carriage return. Good thing there's barely any support for it either ;)

Glad your problem has been fixed.

I'm having an issue with default typefaces

I'm having an issue with the default typeface always going to Times. Where should the Normal.dot be saved?
