Weird question about prepping MBP to sell

I'm looking to sell off a MBP to upgrade. Is it possible to restore just OS X and leave all the installed programs intact? Or is it a two-step thing where you HAVE to format the hard drive and then reinstall the OS and programs?

I'm just thinking that it'd be much easier if it were possible to erase all my personal information from the computer (like keychains, Mail info, MobileMe data, etc), but leave the programs intact.
