This evening I noticed some odd behavior with Safari while testing out hardware upgrades on an old MacBook, and I'm wondering if anyone else has observed the same thing...

I installed iStat Menus to keep an eye on temperatures, but by default I also had my networking information (specifically upload/download rates) displayed. I discovered that while Gmail was open in Safari, my computer was downloading data continuously at an average of ~300 KB/sec (despite me not doing anything actively with Gmail). The downloading continued indefinitely so long as Safari was open and the tab with Gmail was the active one.

I found this to be pretty strange, so I quit Safari and then opened Gmail with Chrome (and later with Firefox). When I did this iStat Menus indicated that my computer wasn't downloading anything after the initial loading of my inbox (i.e., exactly what I would expect). I subsequently replicated all of these observations on my MacBook Air and I had a friend do the same as well. All of the machines we've seen this on are running Yosemite (10.10.2).

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen the same behavior, and if so, if you've been able to track down exactly what data is being downloaded. I've done a number of google searches on this and turned up nothing of use. It's quite the mystery...
