Magnets.

In both laptops, the lids are magnetically bound to the body when you close the lid. That's also how the computer knows to go to sleep.

When you're putting your newer computer right on top of the old one, the magnets in the white one are triggering the sleep mode on the aluminum one. The aluminum notebook thinks you closed the lid.
