Weird Trouble With VLC

Hey everyone, i'm trying to play a .avi file on vlc on my macbook pro and when i play it, it has a green line running diagonally across the screen which also cuts the picture in half and offsets it (basically making it very unwatchable). I know its not just the avi file because this has happened with three other files i tried to play. does anyone know whats wrong? thanks in advance
